Forward Steps Mural
Tullow, County Carlow
This large-scale, three-stage mural was developed by Paul Byrne in collaboration with a group of adult participants from the Forward Steps Resource Centre in Tullow. The project focused on connection to place, using the biodiversity of the adjacent park as a starting point for creative exploration. Through a series of workshops, participants observed, discussed and interpreted the natural environment around them, translating local flora and textures into bold visual elements that would inform the final design.
The resulting mural is a vibrant, floral composition that reflects both the richness of the surrounding landscape and the collective input of the group. Co-created from initial concept through to execution, the work foregrounds shared authorship and community voice, transforming a public wall into a celebration of local identity and environment. Positioned within the town, the mural not only enhances the visual landscape but also reinforces a sense of ownership and pride, demonstrating the role of participatory art in strengthening connections between people, place and nature.
