Seen and Unseen

Augmented Reality Print Series

“Seen and Unseen” is a series of augmented reality prints by Paul Byrne, inspired by the form and symbolism of nesting dolls. Each piece presents a familiar outer figure which, when activated through AR, opens to reveal multiple internal layers, unfolding in unexpected ways. The work reflects on the idea that identity is not fixed or singular, but made up of hidden depths, contradictions and unrealised potential that sit beneath the surface.

By combining physical print with digital animation, the series invites viewers to look beyond first impressions and engage more deeply with what is not immediately visible. The act of revealing these inner layers becomes a metaphor for personal discovery, encouraging reflection on how people are perceived versus how they experience themselves. “Seen and Unseen” positions augmented reality as a tool for expanding narrative within visual art, creating space for complexity, curiosity and deeper engagement with the self.
